The Young Offenders is currently an online, ongoing black
& white graphic novella full of mysterious kids, brutal violence,
and even some social issues, all set against a sci-fi urban-noir
backdrop.
A Brief
History
The Young Offenders have slowly been emerging for some time now. Savage
Henry Lee was working on the original character drafts back in 2006,
but the series didn't become anything proper until Peter Severinson
came onto the scene some months later, flexing his pens like a
bodybuilder pumping his guns at the beach. The project is a first for
both of them.
Series co-creator Savage Henry had this to say on the material:
“I wanted to do a series where there could be a sense of reality to
super-powers. Sure we all say we'd love to fly, but what would the
effect be, psychologically, to see a person fly? Would it be
stupefying? Awe-inspiring? Or would you instinctively hurl a rock to
knock them back down to earth?
“Super-hero comics have
gotten lazy. You get guys throwing fire balls in the middle of open
streets, with no damage being done. Well what's the fun of that? Why
have flammable characters that don't cause burns and super-smart
characters who don't do anything intelligent for their world?
“As well, I've always been
in love with the idea of a teen super-team acting as a questionable
street gang. Young people, coming into their own, discovering and
defining themselves through the choices they make, and the challenges
and crisis they go through. The Young Offenders is that story.”
Though about teenagers, the book is intended primarily for adults and
subversive children.
Similarly, though about contemporary social issues, the story does
feature futuristic sci-fi action.
The Young Offenders most definitely deal with mature themes and use
filthy language, violence and questionable morals to get through their
days.
